Over the years since about the age of about 14 I’ve
experimented with various different hair colours; this has ranged from simple
highlights, to all over black and a variety of bright colours in my fringe. I then
decided I wanted a change from the dark but getting out black can be an utter
nightmare! I ended up at the hair dressers where I got a half head of bleach
(for some reason they refused to do a whole head?!) which left me with the most
hideous multi coloured hair which I couldn’t stand and had to dye over, first
with a reddy colour and then to bright purple (pictured left) This brings me
almost up to date, until I perhaps made the biggest mistake so far! Up until
this point despite the multiple dye jobs my hair had remained fairly healthy,
this was until one day at school a friend and I (she had bright red hair)
decided that we wanted to go blonde…
So that night we went to our local
beauty/drug store and stocked up on a variety of home bleaching kits, we
decided to get two each and then a backup dye in our current colours just in
case the worse should happen, then headed back home to start our new project. We
decided to do my friends hair first and after the two bleaching kits had been
on her hair had turned a really lovely honey blonde colour. I was so excited
after seeing her results to see how I’d look blonde! This wasn’t to be…instead
of the golden honey blonde I ended up with toxic orange – just imagine the
colour of Fanta – it was horrific! (Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of
this for you it was just too awful!!)
The next day I had to go grab my
best friend and drive her to the shop to get her to run in for me to buy
another bleach whilst I waited in the car as I couldn’t bear to be seen!! Haha what
are best friends for eh? (;
Thanks to the emergency bleach and a few
other products I finally got it to the colour I wanted (see right), this was
four years ago and although I have stuck to the blonde my hair is still
suffering from my impatience of doing it all in the space of two days.
So
now after that long ramble of my hair history I’d like to give a few quick tips
and product reviews for anyone else who’s thinking of biting the bullet and
going blonde!
The first home bleaching kit I used was the ‘smart blonde’ in shade platinum. This product boasts to lift hair 7 shades lighter in one use and is available for under £5 at superdrug. I was actually really impressed with this product and thought that it really made a difference to the colour of my hair. This was the main product that lifted my hair so much to the lovely toxic orange mentioned earlier. The other kit I brought literally did nothing I can’t even remember the name of it which just shows that I thought so little of it! Another product that I really enjoy using is the Live colour XXL blondes I tend to use max blonde or ice blonde as I don’t really see too much of a difference between them. I use the Live colour XXL currently to touch up roots as I don’t feel that a blonde hair dye does enough. If you have longer hair than shoulder length I suggest buying two if you’re planning to do your whole head as the mix doesn’t go too far!

I have suggested both of these products to people who have wanted to go blonde and everyone who’s used them have always had ready good results and seem to be happy with how their hair has ended up!
A toner or a toning shampoo is a good idea to use in conjunction with bleaching as it helps to eliminate brassy orange tones in the hair and results in less bleaching being needed. My personal favourite is the L’Oreal silver shampoo. My aunt treated me to the 1500ml salon size bottle for Christmas which I think will actually last me longer than a life time! And is available on amazon for £15.99!
A deep conditioner should also be
used after bleaching as well as heat protectants and regular trims because the
ends take the most damage from the bleach. Unfortunately I didn’t follow these
rules and my hair ended up super damaged and short where the ends just kept
splitting resulting in my hair having to be cut into a bob cause I’d let it get
so ruined! So please please please take my advice and as soon as you bleach it
go get a trim it will save you so much length in the end! I’m now in the
process of repair so I think my next post will be products I’ve tired/using to
remedy this issue! So let me know if you’d be interested in that (:
Hope you enjoyed this post, what
products would you recommend for achieving blonde hair?
Lots of love,
Lauren
