Damaged hair saviours!

As I mentioned in my last post after home bleaching my hair it was left in an awful condition and parts of it felt like wire rather than hair. This lead me to experiment with various different hair care products to try remedy this problem. Of course no product will fix damaged hair but they can help to make them appear healthier, whilst other product on offer can be used to set the scalp up for the best possible conditions for growth and therefore produce more healthy hair. This post will be a review of some of the products I’ve been using and some other tips which I try stick to to keep my hair as healthy as possible and also to aid in hair growth.

One of the first products I researched was the ‘Lee Stafford hair growth treatment – for hair that doesn’t grow past a certain length’. I read so many positive reviews about how this product made peoples hair feel so healthy and that it sped up hair growth so I thought that this was something I’d invest in. In this range there are also a shampoo and conditioner and as there was a three for two deal I thought I’d grab all three. Initial views where that the shampoo and conditioner felt cheap and left my hair feeling dry despite being quite a pricey items at around £7 each for a 200ml bottle. The growth treatment however felt rich and luxurious on the hair and it smells amazing! The only downfall I saw was that the instructions said to use an egg sized amount which was around 1/3 of the pot so you don’t get many uses for your money. For Christmas last year I asked for a stockpile of this product after really enjoying my first use and ended up with 9 pots to use, this took me up to around April this year. Since then I have not repurchased not because the product isn’t a great conditioner – because I really do think it is and it helped restore some of my damage and make my hair much more manageable – but because the hair growth I was hoping for wasn’t happening so I thought it was time to switch it up a bit as the scalp can often become used to certain products if used too long and stop having as much as an effect.

Another item I purchased was an oil which I use on my ends generally applied to towel dried hair, although I do sometime add a very small amount to dry hair before applying heat – but only a little! You don’t want your hair to look greasy. The one I opted for was the VO5 miracle concentrate elixir with argon oil. There was no real reason behind my choice other than the bottle looking cute and the price was fairly inexpensive. I’ve had this product for at least 8 months now and I’m only about half way through as you only have to apply a little. There is a pleasant scent to this product and although I’m sure there are better oils out there this one does the job for me!

My hair dresser recommended the brand headmasters to me when I told her I was looking for products to make my hair healthier. I found an intensive treatment by this brand in my local supermarket and luckily they had a BOGOF offer on this product so I got two for £5. The name of this product is the colour brilliance miracle moisture mask, I’ve used up 4 tubes of this product and found that it did have a positive effect on my hair making it feel super smooth after washing. The consistency is quite thick so I suggest putting it on in stages as once you start working it through the hair it goes further than you think it will. The scent to me is lovely its very mild but has floral hints to it. I’ve ran out of this item at the moment but will be repurchasing when the offer is back on! Hehe (;

Now my final two conditioning products are fairly recent buys within the last month; the first are the mane and tail shampoo and conditioner. I’m sure most people will already know and probably have tried this product as it’s all over the internet – I think I’m the last to jump on the bandwagon! Despite the images of horses on the products they are safe for human use – there are instructions on the back for both human and animal use. I read a ton of reviews on this product as well as watching some mane and tail before and after hair growth videos on youtube which swayed me into purchasing. I got mine from Amazon for around £7 for the pair including delivery. The shampoo is 335ml whilst the conditioner had 33.3% extra free at 473ml which I wasn’t expecting to get but I thought was great as I always use up my conditioner before my shampoo. I think this has to be one of the best hair products I have ever brought I’ve noticed a massive difference in the feel of my hair and I actually think it has grown since I’ve started using it. I’m only a month in so far and many reviews say that there isn’t a real noticeable difference in length until about 3 months of use so I will keep you updated with that! The shampoo has a weird consistency and is a pearlescent colour whilst the conditioner is a pale yellow. Both have the same scent which I think just smells clean with a hint of apples – it’s not unpleasant. I would definitely recommend this range to anyone who is trying to grow their hair or make their hair healthier.

The second product is a ‘split remedy’ by TRESemmé which is a formula which is meant to visibly reduce split ends by 80% after 3 uses. I can’t remember how much I paid for this item but it was definitely under £5 from my local supermarket. I’ve been using this product daily as it says that its suitable to apply to dry hair as well as damp and I have seen a difference to the ends but I’m not sure I’d rate it as an 80% improvement. I would suggest having one product for the ends is a good idea as this is the area which takes the most damage however the VO5 oil I have works in pretty much the same way so I wouldn’t say it was necessary to have both unless you like to switch things up a little. The smell is really yummy fruity scent which is probably one of the reasons why I’ve been using this item daily.

Finally to sum up I have a few tips which I try to stick to try reduce the amount of damage I’m doing to my hair;

1. Never brush your hair when wet as it is most delicate at this stage and more susceptible to breakages. If you really must brush your hair when its wet use a wide tooth comb as this is less damaging than a brush cause it lets you work through tangles rather than ripping through them. I use my wide tooth comb all the time and have hidden my hair brushes from myself to prevent me from unnecessary damage!

2. Try to leave your hair as long as possible between washes – I wash mine every other day sometimes I can push it to every 3rd day if I’m not planning on going out or if I’m gunna wear it up. This gives your hairs natural oils a chance to nourish the scalp which in turn makes hair healthier.

3. Use minimal heat and when using heat use a protectant (my favourite is the Got 2 B guardian angel) – during the week whilst I’m at work I tend to opt for heat free styles, my go to is a top knot although I do allow myself to straighten my fringe. I wouldn’t be able to cut heat out all the time so making it a minimal is the best I can do for me and my hair but if you can cut it out completely you’d notice a big difference in your hair!

4. Get a trim – if your ends are too badly split there will be no chance of hair growth or healthy looking hair, split ends continue to split up the hair and break off which causes you to loose length rather than obtain it.

Wow that was a ramble; I never knew I could talk about hair and hair products for so long! I’ll have to make sure my next post is a short one! haha I hope some of this may have been helpful to some of you, as I’m always researching up products which may help me on my hair mission (:

What products would you recommend for healthy looking hair or hair growth?

Lots of love
Lauren
